Panasonic introduces the KX-WP1050 Wi-Fi phone for use with Skype™, the popular Voice Over IP communications service that allows point-to-point calling around the world. Skype™ users can enjoy incredible cost savings combined with the convenience of a regular phone. The KX-WP1050 frees the user from being tied down to a computer so he or she can move from room to room without worrying about missed calls. Or make and receive calls in a public hotspot, which doesn’t require browser authentication. The included travel router makes it easy to take this incredible communications solution on the road.

Easy to Use
Panasonic has taken the complexity out of making Skype™ calls by including a complete kit which can be set up and used by virtually anyone with little or no computer experience. The included router simplifies the set up of the Wi-Fi access point, and guarantees a secure wireless connection with automatic 256-bit AES encryption setup (WPA). The router can also be plugged into a hotel or office network giving the user a wireless connection for their laptop and the ability to use the Wi-Fi phone simultaneously. The AC adapter is compatible with all voltages from 100V to 240V, so it can be used by simply attaching the AC cord (sold separately) for a particular country.

This new model offers the range and security of WPA encrypted Wi-Fi technology, as well as Quality of Service (QoS) to improve voice quality. It features easy menu-driven operation, and a loud handset speakerphone, as well as a built-in headset jack for those long international calls. At just 0.62″ thick, and weighing less than 4 ounces, the phone is convenient and easy to carry. The Wireless LAN and VoIP

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

A Local Area Network connected without wires known as Wireless LAN, in most cases it uses WiFi technology. You have a wireless router or hub, which may in turn be connected to an ATA.
The caller, who may be using an IP phone or any other communicating device, can make calls through the wireless LAN if he is within the range of the network.
VoIP on Wi-Fi hotspots is a great thing for callers. Just like you take your laptop computer along with you for a business lunch or some revision among classmates, why not take your IP Phone or pocket PC along? Well, wireless VoIP is taking time to gain popular acceptance.

There are some main issues due to which wireless VoIP is not readily accepted everywhere:

  • VoIP on LANs is deployed mostly in corporate environments but not in houses.
  • Wireless VoIP poses problems of scalability for enterprises.
  • As is the case with nearly all wireless networks, Quality of Service (QoS) is not as good as with wired networks.
  • The cost, in terms of money, time and skills, is higher to set up and maintain a wireless network than a wired network.
  • The security threats posed by the use of VoIP are even more inherent over a wireless network, since access points are more numerous within the perimeter of the network.

iCall Brings Seamless Free VoIP to iPhone

A company I’m calling iCraw just announced a VoIP system for the iPhone that allows you to hop onto a VoIP network mid-call whenever you hit an open hotspot. It also offers free calls to the U.S. and Canada. It should be available on the Apple iPhone App store next week. Since I really enjoy T-Mobile’s Hotspot@Home UMA offerings, this sounds like a great way to save some money and get even better call quality on a non-T-Mobile phone. Here’s the feature list:

* Make and receive calls over WiFi
* Transfer inbound calls from your regular cell minutes to WiFi instantly
* Access your same address book
* Customize your voicemail options

Why is it now iCraw? Maybe if the founders could figure out mail-merge in their email application…
