Alianza Announces Enterprise Connectivity Service

Alianza Announces Enterprise Connectivity Service
Allows service providers to extend hosted voice platform into enterprise networks with SIP trunks

Salt Lake City, Utah – February 10, 2009 – Alianza, Inc., a leading provider of hosted voice over WiMAX solutions, today announced the availability of its Enterprise Connectivity Service to extend the reach of its hosted voice platform into enterprise networks. The Alianza Enterprise Connectivity Service allows service providers to build SIP trunks and interconnect them between the Alianza platform and a Gateway or PBX on an end-user network. Enterprise customers can use their existing PBX and phones, maintaining the value of existing investments while taking advantage of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) features and cost savings.

As with all Alianza services, the Alianza Enterprise Connectivity Service’s back-end creation and management processes are automated and completely integrated with other pieces of the platform. Service providers can create an unlimited number of SIP trunk bundle offerings. These bundles include the number of concurrent calls, set-up fee, monthly recurring charge and a non-recurring charge, which can be named and priced for each bundle. End-users can log in and add a SIP trunk to their account with the click of a button.

“Traditional trunk products like ISDN PRI circuits are limited to 23 (T1) to 30 (E1) channels per trunk, depending on the market, and can take weeks to order and provision. With Alianza SIP trunks, service providers are not limited to a fixed number of ports. This reduces costs and allows enterprise customers to gradually scale a voice solution to meet their needs,” said Brian Beutler, CEO of Alianza. “With the ease of administration, flexibility and lower costs, the Alianza Enterprise Connectivity Service gives service providers a powerful package for enterprise customers.”

As with residential and small and medium business (SMB) services, calling plans can be attached to the Enterprise Connectivity Service to provide better pricing for enterprise customers. In addition, the wholesale cost for a single concurrent call bundle is lower than that of a residential line. SIP trunks also aggregate many phones through the same bundle, which allows the end-user to make better use of resources. The SIP trunk replaces the traditional T1/E1 interface and allows companies to add or remove capacity as needs change rather than requiring weeks of lead time to modify traditional circuits.

Polycom SoundPoint IP 301 IP Phone

March 13th, 2009
The Polycom SoundPoint IP 301 phone is a good cost-effective entry-level choice for businesses and homes alike. It has features and specs that are conducive to a corporate environment and is aimed at boosting productivity in a communication-savvy environment. It has 2 Ethernet ports, 2 lines possible, a large LCD display, and has the possibility of being powered via Ethernet. It is however quite unusual in the looks. Also, the configuration is not that easy.
polycon-ip_301
This phone’s audio quality is quite good, even with handsets and headsets. It has 10 dedicated hard keys and 3 soft keys which are context- sensitive. Five of the keys are configurable for shortcuts. It is qdequately and interestingly features, with one touch access to the most common ones.
The phone also embeds applications for video, data and web capabilities. Within a business environment, it will surely pave the way towards unified communication with ease and efficiency. However, the phone’s initial configuration is not that easy.
The phone looks rather awkward, with a large frame and small buttons. While some might find the design original, others might overlook the design for the interesting features and specifications.
The phone’s display is monochrome but nicely large with 4 lines x 20 characters, but it is not backlit. This is one major drawback in IP phones.
Concerning connectivity, the phone does great. It gives 2 Ethernet ports, one of which you can use for powering the phone (PoE) instead of an electrical power adapter. You can also use the phone with two registered lines.

VoIP Accessories

March 12th, 2009

As the number of VoIP subscribers has increased, so has the variety of accessories and gadgets designed to enhance the way you use it. More are being released each month, but we’ve rounded up some of the common types of products you can pick up below.

Combo-phones

philips_voip321

A number of hardware manufacturers have come up with phones that combine both a VoIP connection and an existing landline so that both can be used through a single handset. Examples include the Philips VOIP321 and the cordless Cisco iPhone, both which can make conventional calls over the phone network but also have inbuilt Skype software that allows calls over the Internet. The phones have different ring tones to let you know whether an incoming call is from the phone network or a Skype user.

Headsets

voip-headset

To make PC-based VoIP calling as comfortable as possible, a range of manufacturers offer headset/microphone combinations. For example, Plantronics offers a cordless Bluetooth headset that slips over your ear. Just plug the receiver into a USB port on your PC and you’re away.

VoIP mouse

For the traveler who wants to minimize the number of gadgets in the bag, Sony offers a mouse that doubles as a VoIP handset. Looking like a conventional mouse, it flips open to reveal a clamshell phone. Yappermouse is another such option.

VoIP speakerphones

For those who like to keep both hands free, but don’t want to wear a headset, a speakerphone in a great idea. One example is the MV100 from accessories specialist mVOX. It connects via a USB port and offers clear voice quality with any VoIP service.

Wi-Fi handsets

wifi-headset

The fact that Wi-Fi capabilities are being included in more and more products is good news for VoIP users. A recent example is the Skype Wi-Fi phone from Netgear. The unit allows free calls to other Skype users and cheap calls to conventional phones from any Wi-Fi home network or suitable public hotspot. You can also forward calls to a landline or mobile phone when you’re out of Wi-Fi range.
